Myprotein Impact Whey Isolate Review

Myprotein, a UK based sports nutrition company recently started shipping some of their products to India via their India specific website. I’ve been using their products for a while now and in this post I do a review of their impact whey isolate.

Availability and Price

Anyone using supplements in India knows how difficult it is to get good quality supplements here. If you think you’ve found a great brand then there’s the question of availability. If it’s available then the price is very high and most troubling is the concern over whether you’re getting an original product. Why manufacturers don’t introduce some way to verify if a product is original or not, baffles me. After all, it is in their interest to see that their customers are getting their product as they intended it to be. I digress, getting back to the topic on hand. All the concerns I have raised above are addressed by Myprotein. You will be getting a quality product at a great price (starting from INR 1919 for 1 kg) straight from the manufacturer when you order from Myprotein.

There are however a couple of things to be aware of. First, you will need to order for INR 5000 or more to avail free shipping and second, there’s the small hassle of dealing with Indian customs. Myprotein do not have a DDP (delivered duty paid) setup in India yet (meaning there is a chance they will be setting this up in the future), which means you as a customer will need to pay duty. From experience, this happens to be around INR 400-500 for a 2.5 kg bag of protein (but don’t take my word for it). This isn’t too much and even after including customs duty it is still incredible value for money compared to anything you can buy locally. The only real issue is the delivery times, as customs tends to sit on it for a few weeks. So, as long as you take this into consideration and order early enough, you should be good.

Taste and Mixability

Mixability is fairly standard in a shaker bottle (are there any whey proteins that don’t mix properly in a shaker bottle these days?) and there are no clumps, so it’s perfectly fine. As far as taste goes, I have tried the chocolate smooth and natural vanilla flavours and there definitely are better tasting whey proteins out there. Having said that the chocolate smooth flavour is rather all right, though I must admit it smells better than it tastes. The natural vanilla is rather bland but if you use it as a base for your smoothie and blend in some berries and/or banana, it tastes great. Mind that all the taste and mixability tests were done by mixing with cold water.

Nutrition and Ingredients

This is a protein that is consistently ranked at the top in independent tests for quality and value. Depending on the flavour you get about 22-23 grams of protein, around 0.1 grams of fat and around 0.6 grams of carbs in each scoop, which is 25 grams. This means you’re getting about 92% percent protein per scoop, which is great. Further since this is an isolate there is virtually no fat or carbs and is very easy on the stomach. I’ve had issues of bloating with whey concentrates and have completely switched to isolates (even though isolates are a lot more expensive in general) and I have had no issues with impact whey isolate.

A quick glance at the ingredients list is all you need because it is as basic and short as it gets. And this is a great thing. Some proteins have an ingredients list that reads like an essay and all this means is that there are a ton of additives. While not having these additives affects the taste a bit, it is incredible from a nutrition standpoint. I would much rather have a decent tasting protein with great nutrition than a great tasting protein with bad/decent nutrition. The only thing I would like changed is switching the soy lecithin (which generally tends to be GMO unless it specifically says non-GMO) to a sunflower lecithin or a non-GMO variant of soy lecithin.

Myprotein’s impact whey isolate is a great protein that is fantastic value for money while having a great nutrition and ingredients profile. You are getting an original product directly from the manufacturer and you can be rest assured that there has been no tampering by middlemen. While I can’t speak for all the flavours, there is some scope for improvement in the flavour profile of the flavours I tried. The biggest drawback would be the long delivery times though that is mostly due to Indian customs.

I cannot conclude without talking about the great customer support as well. In one of my shipments I received a bag of protein that had been staples shut. While I’m not certain if it had been shipped that way, I do have my suspicions it was our supremely inadequate customs department, when I wrote to customer support along with a picture, they immediately shipped me a replacement bag. All in all, excellent customer service for a product that comes highly recommended.
